Solomun, known professionally as the four-time DJ Awards winner, hails from Travnik, Yugoslavia and grew up in Hamburg, Germany. After his early life in the former nation, he moved to the latter with his family where he began to develop his passion for the art of DJing from a young age.
He established a fledgling production firm in collaboration with a few colleagues, where they produced short films collectively. After a five-year tenure in the film industry, he discovered that his true calling was music. Whenever his cousin, who was an avid club-goer, visited, he would bring along cassettes for him to listen to.
Solomun’s exposure to music beyond commercial radio through these tapes opened his eyes to the extensive and varied possibilities of music. His curiosity quickly drove him to start collecting vinyl records, and by the age of 16 he was already performing at House of Youth for other young people. After a hiatus, at 23, Solomun resumed his career in music and began producing his own works.
Prior to 2005, Solomun acquired knowledge of the music production industry by learning from a close friend who owned a hip-hop record label. In 2005, he ventured into music production and established Diynamic, a record label, with his business partner Adriano Trolio who also manages Diynamic’s booking.
Diynamic was launched in 2006 when Solomun first encountered H.O.S.H. Since then, the label has been living by its motto of “Do It Yourself”. Later that year, Solomun released his debut EP on Diynamic, aptly titled ‘Solomun EP’. Since then, the label has seen the release of several other EPs, compilations and albums, including Solomun’s album ‘Dance Baby’ in 2009.
In 2010, Solomun launched 2DIY4, a more experimental label. The following year, he was asked to remix Noir & Haze’s “Around,” a track that was later hailed as Remix of the Year by Resident Advisor. His popularity continued to grow, culminating in him being awarded Mixmag’s “DJ of the Year” in 2012.
Solomun was recognized for his production skills in 2013 when he was awarded Producer of the Year by the DJ Awards in Ibiza and Best International DJ by the Cool Awards in Brazil. He then kicked off the Ibiza 2013 season with a special Burn Studios Residency bootcamp.
Solomun has been involved in the music scene since the end of June 2014, when he and his sister, along with Adriano Trolio, assumed ownership of Hamburg-based club Ego. Influenced by the likes of hip-hop, soul, funk, and R&B, Solomun’s music is a blend of house music, coupled with deep and soulful basslines, uplifting melodies, and powerful vocals.
In 2015, Solomun held two residencies on Ibiza–at Pacha and Destino night-clubs. Kicking off 2016, he had two events at The BPM Festival, namely the Diynamic in the Jungle and the Solomun +1 with Mano Le Tough.
Following their North American tour, the Bosnian artist joined the Diynamic family in celebration of their 10th anniversary at Watergate in Berlin on April 9, 2016. They continued the festivities with a 10-year celebration at DC-10 in Ibiza on August 19, 2016.
In 2016 and 2017, Solomun held two residencies in Ibiza, Spain, namely Solomun +1 at Pacha and Solomun +1 live at Ushuaia and Destino. He also appeared at renowned events such as Ultra Europe, Exit Festival, Melt! Festival, Tomorrowland, and Movement Croatia, followed by a performance at Hungexpo in 2018.
In 2018, Solomun released his single “Customer is King” as part of a collaboration with Ro and a music video, both of which were made entirely within Grand Theft Auto V’s in-game engine. Additionally, Solomun was featured as an in-residence DJ for the videogame Grand Theft Auto Online as part of the After Hours DLC.
