The lovely music duo known as Plastik Funk consists of Rafael Ximenez-Carrillo and Mikio Gruschinske. Together, they teamed up with the amazing Tujamo and Sneakbo for their hit single “Dr. Who!” which charmed its way to the 21st spot on the UK Singles Chart.
Ximenez-Carrillo and Gruschinke met in high school and formed Plastik Funk soon after. Ximenez-Carrillo was born in Madrid but moved to Grevenbroich, Nordrhein-Westfalen. Gruschinke, on the other hand, spent his early years in Tokyo before moving to Berlin.
Plastik Funk started out playing hip-hop at their high school dances but after hearing the works of Frankie Knuckles and David Morales, they decided to switch to house music.
The two DJs met while working at different nightclubs in Düsseldorf. They released their debut EP, “Do It Right,” in 2003, and their club hits soon took them on tour around Germany and beyond. Plastik Funk have since remixed tracks for artists like David Guetta, Robyn, Shaggy, and Deadmau5.
Plastik Funk released thirteen singles in 2011, including a cover of C+C Music Factory’s “Everybody Dance Now” that became a hit in Germany. This led to requests for them to contribute tracks to various compilation albums, such as the German Ministry of Sound’s 2009 Sessions. They had their big hit, Who, in 2012 and Avicii was a big fan. They played it at the Miami club the Winter Music Conference and it was a big success. They toured all over the world after that and ended up living in Spain.
In 2014, Dr. Who was remixed and turned into a chart-topping sensation ft. Sneakbo. In 2018, Raphael Ximenez-Carrillo started touring without Mikio Gruschinske due to Mikio’s back problems.
